# Global Hack Week

## What is GHW?

Global Hack Week (GHW) is a recurring event organized by Major League Hacking (MLH). Yes, they do like their acronyms, just like in the world of programming 😅.

I find it really interesting for newcomers to programming or even experienced devs in one area who want a taste of what other types of programming are out there.

## What is the format?

### Sessions / Workshops

With different hosts during a week focused around a subject, this time it was **Beginners Week** from January 5th to 11th 2024, but they range from Al/ML Week to Games week, APIs, Security, Cloud to name a few.

Some of the sessions topics this time are:

* Intro to Web Development
    
* GitHub Basics - Tricks and Tips
    
* Building your first iOS App
    
* Building a Portfolio with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
    
* Cybersecurity Essentials for Developers

### **Challenges** / Hacks

They range from:

* Redeeming the GHW partner's offers, like a free domain at Porkbun (my favorite registrar) to use in your projects for free for 1 year!
    
* Writing your first `Hello World!` program, a definite rite of passage for all of us.
    
* Different types of coding challenges or solving a leetcode problem.
    
* Filling out their Address Form to get mailed some sweet SWAG stikers for free!
    
* All types of encouraging things, for example: trying a new tool like GitHub Copilot, a no-code tool, or a new programming language or technology.

## Is it free and how can I attend?

You can find this week's event at [ghw.mlh.io](http://ghw.mlh.io) it is free to register and online over Twitch and YouTube, so anyone can participate.
